The guilds can easily fit the role of oppressive mega-corporations with the players taking on the roles of plucky eco-rebels, freelance mercs or even pro-technology field agents.

While Ravnica specifically is more technological than steampunk and more fantasy-based than cyberpunk, the themes inherent to these genres make for awesome campaign ideas. With 10 indomitable factions constantly vying for control, Ravnica lends itself very well to the sub-genres of sci-fi punk. With the guildpact in place, Ravnica is relatively safe and peaceful in comparison to medieval-themed worlds, but intrigue and adventure still abound.

Instead, science and magic have progressed in tandem on Ravnica, and magically fueled technology and life sciences are now commonplace. The wilds and natural places of the world were usurped long ago in ages so distant that almost none alive remember them. Like The Foundation's Trantor and Star Wars' Coruscant, Ravnica became an ecumenopolis. Over time, the prosperity of the guilds grew to such a degree that the planet became entirely covered in the cityscape. This effectively saved civilization on Ravnica but also pushed the rivalries of the guilds into more clandestine and indirect conflicts. Thousands of years in the setting's past, a magically enforced law, known as the guildpact, was forged to stop highly destructive wars between the guilds. A synergy of tabletop game's two highest pillars of D&D and MtG, the setting of Ravnica is best understood as one huge, world-spanning city, dominated by the influence of 10 separate organizations known as guilds. Half the planet's population claims membership in one of the guilds and they vary in both alignment and structure, but each is responsible for at least one aspect of life in the city while also vying for total control over it.
